Exercising with your Mzansi Mask

Although life won’t go back to normal as we knew it, we’re slowly easing back into a new version of a “normal” life. One of the ways that people are taking back a little bit of control is by exercising outdoors. This is allowed, on the condition that you wear a mask.

There has been a lot of conversation about how easy it is to exercise while wearing a mask. Many argue that wearing a mask can make breathing particularly difficult, but this doesn’t need to be a huge challenge if you’re wearing the right mask.

Can I Exercise With My Mzansi Mask?

Mzansi Masks are carefully designed to offer the maximum protection possible without compromising comfort. This fit extends to when you’re working out, allowing you to comfortably exercise with your mask on.

Grayson Wickham, a physical therapist and certified strength and conditioning specialist at Movement Vault says, “As long as you don't have an underlying respiratory or cardiovascular condition, and are listening to your body, you will most likely be getting enough oxygen while exercising with a face mask on.”

Mzansi Masks are designed to fit snugly on the bridge of the nose and close to the jawline under the chin. There’s also airspace underneath the nose that makes breathing easier as your heart rate increases.

The elastic bands that loop behind the ears allow for an easy fit that can be adjusted for optimum comfort.  Most importantly the components (materials) used in Mzansi Masks are also selected to ensure maximum breathability.

Tips to Breathe Easier Wearing a Mask

Although it’s entirely possible to exercise wearing your Mzansi Mask, it’s not quite the same as exercising with your face open to the fresh air. To help make your daily hike, run or weight session a little bit easier, here are a few tips.

  • The more that you exercise with a face mask on, the easier it becomes
  • Make sure that your mask is a good fit and not too tight so that you can breathe through the airspace underneath the nose
  • Get a mask with elastics that go around your ears, rather than your head, so that you can tie your hair up easily
  • Buy a mask that has breathable fabrics without compromising its protective function (Mzansi Masks has three layers of fabric that have been carefully selected for maximum protection and breathability)

Care Instructions for After Exercise

A mask is significantly less effective when dirty and damp from exercise. After each exercise session, no matter how light or heavy it is, make sure that you wash your mask.

Mzansi Masks are reusable barrier masks that can be washed in a washing machine. Please follow our recommended instructions to care of your mask to ensure the longevity of your mask.  All masks will experience wear so please follow our care instructions.

Exercise Safely

Keep in mind that if you do have underlying respiratory problems, such as asthma, then it may be more comfortable to exercise indoors, without a face mask.

Remember that social distancing still applies when you’re exercising and the need to wear a mask is not just about you, it’s also about the people that you pass on the trail.
